A group of greyhound trainers accumulated a grand prize by snatching victory in the sport’s biggest team event.
The professional trainers, who are all attached to Owlerton Greyhound Stadium in Hillsborough, scooped £12,500 after seeing off competition from across the country in the prestigious Bookmakers’ Afternoon Greyhound Services Track Championship Grand Final.
Sheffield’s team won four out of 10 races to finish 19 points ahead of the nearest rivals Newcastle.
They also beat Peterborough, Romford, Hall Green and Brighton & Hove.
John Gilburn, managing director of the historic stadium, which opened in 1929, said: “We are extremely proud to see our talented team of trainers win one of the most prestigious events in the racing calendar.
“This is our second major title of the year.
“It was a truly electric afternoon and with each team putting their strongest possible teams together for the final, we can be even more proud that we came out on top.
“This win puts the icing on the cake on what has been a truly fantastic year for the stadium.”
The only other team to win more than one race at the final was Newcastle.
Half of the prize money will be split between the trainers and the rest is to go to stadium prize money.
The Sheffield team was also crowned overall winner at the BAGS Easter Eggstravaganza last April.
In recognition of the two successes and investment at the stadium, Owlerton has been selected to host the Greyhound Trainers Association Trainers’ Championship in March.
