TRADE unionists held events around South Yorkshire to mark Workers’ Memorial Day.

Speeches were made and wreaths laid in recognition of people killed or injured whilst doing their jobs.

Events in Sheffield were organised by the city’s Trades Union Council.

The wreaths were from trade unionists and groups such as Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory Service and Irwin Mitchell solicitors.

Lord Mayor Coun Sylvia Dunkley also laid one of the floral tributes.

Barnsley Central Labour MP Dan Jarvis, among those laying a wreath in his town, said: “Last year 171 workers in Britain died in accidents at work, many of them in industries absolutely vital to our economy such as construction and agriculture.

“In the modern age we live in, the number of people losing their lives at work is still too high.”
