A TRUE green hero took the top prize as Sheffield saluted its environmental champions.
Mike Wild was named overall winner at the fourth Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards in recognition of a lifetime devoted to protecting the world around us.
Mike was one of the founding members of the organisation which became the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham 25 years ago and has also been instrumental in working on the city’s Five Weirs Walk.
Mike shared the Lifetime Achievement award with the Wildlife Trust, which recently celebrated its 25th birthday by securing the Greno Woods ancient woodland to protect it for future generations (see centre pages).

Other winners on the celebration night hosted by BBC Look North weatherman Paul Hudson at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel were Dobcroft Infant School in the Primary School section, two years after being runners-up in the same category (page 2).
Senior School honours went to Wisewood School and Community Sports College, which recently became the fourth senior school in the city to reach that standard (page 3).
The work done by JF Finnegan and Jefferson Sheard Architects on the stunning new Sheffield College complex was anough to win them the Design & Build prize (page 4).
And the South Yorkshire Energy Centre, based at Heeley City Farm, took the Innovation honours for the pioneering work they do in spreading their message to the whole community (page 5).
Lauren Dixon won the Individual award for all the voluntary work she has done with Sheffield Is My Planet’s Community Champion scheme (page 8), while Sheffield Freegle were named Recycling winners for how they match unwanted items with someone who can make good use of it (page 9).
There were joint winners in the Community category, with the judges unable to separate the top two of Friends of Dronfield Station, who have done remarkable work over the last four years, and South Yorkshire-based volunteering charity BTCV (page 10).
And there was another double celebration in the Business section, with the honours shared between Sheffield Forgemasters, who have turned part of their industrial site into a green oasis in the heart of Sheffield’s East End, and First South Yorkshire, who have invested heavily in a greener, more fuel-efficient fleet (page 11).
The awards were sponsored by E.ON UK and supported by AESSEAL, Homeco, Sheffield High School, B&Q, Stagecoach and First South Yorkshire. Thanks also to Steve Byers and Luke Williamson from Sheffield City Council.
