Proud Sheffielders can show they’ve been there, done that and got the T-shirt after funding a new project to print maps of the city on clothing.
Dozens of people have chipped in to help graphic designer Alex Szabo-Haslam, of Lowedges, who started an online campaign to raise £2,000 so he could make T-shirts featuring city maps at an affordable price.
The 32-year-old raised his target in just over a day – and is now creating 350 T-shirts with maps of cities across the world for customers.
Alex, design director at Truth Studios, based in Heeley, said: “It started because I wanted a Sheffield maps T-shirt just to own myself.
“Printing one T-shirt off becomes really expensive so what I was hoping for was to get enough pre-orders so I could bring the costs down and make them at an affordable price.
“I’ve done these sort of projects before and normally it takes me a month to get 100 backers, which is fine.
“This one, within 30 hours I had about 200 per cent of the funding target, so it really took me by surprise.
“Some people who have ordered them have asked for 10 – I get the impression that lots of people are buying them as gifts.”
Other cities featured on the T-shirts, which are unisex, include Toyko, London, Amsterdam and Barcelona, so people from across the globe can wear their hearts on their sleeve. Yesterday, after one week of the campaign, there were 159 backers who had raised more then £7,000.
Alex has now designed a second Sheffield map T-shirt using open street map data, and offers the chance for people to request a custom-made city T-shirt.
He said: “I didn’t want to put the road names on because I prefer the look without it but the T-shirts are really detailed. If you take the Sheffield map you can start from the city centre and travel anywhere you want. I can see my house on it, I can find my way to work.
“I suppose if you had a few drinks you might be able to use it to find your way around if you got lost!
“We do a lot of work with commercial clients so we usually make brochures and leaflets. This is definitely a new thing for us.”
The T-shirts cost from £28 and the crowdfunding campaign will run for another three weeks.
