CHARLIE Clerehugh is counting down the days till he helps carry the Olympic torch through South Yorkshire.

The 13-year-old from Sheffield said he ‘can’t believe’ he’ll be taking part in the big event leading up to the London Games.

“I don’t know why I’ve been chosen - it was a real surprise and I’m really excited about it,” said the High Storrs school pupil.

“I know I’ll be running in Rotherham but I’m still waiting for all the details. It’s going to be fantastic, I can’t wait.”

Charlie was nominated by mum Lauren but, though he is a Sheffield Eagles fan, he won’t be able to wear the club’s shirt on June 26.

“You get a special running kit,” said the youngster, who also supports Sheffield United. “I do a lot of fun runs and I play tennis but I’ve never done anything like this before, it’s great.”

Charlie’s grandad Ian, from Ecclesall, said it was a ‘tremendous honour’.

“He’s a very keen sportsman and plays tennis and football but this is something special,” he added.
