Artful youngsters put pen to paper to design a number of festive scenes that will be on the front of the official Christmas cards sent out to thousands of people by two MPs.

School pupils were invited to take part in competitions to design Christmas cards for Dearne politicians John Healey and Michael Dugher.

Mr Dugher, Labour MP for Barnsley East, visited eight schools in Barnsley to hand out prizes and certificates to the winners of his constituency-wide competition.

Birkwood Primary School in Cudworth was announced as the overall winner, where Michael presented the winning pupil with a framed version of their card and £100 worth of Tesco vouchers.

Mr Dugher said: “This is the seventh year I’ve run the competition and I’m really pleased with the amount of interest and the number of schools that have taken part.

“All the entries were of a really high standard.”

Meanwhile, over in the Wentworth and Dearne constituency fellow Labour MP John Healey dished out the prizes in his own school Christmas card competition.

After pupils submitted their designs, seven were chosen as runners up whose drawings will appear on the back of the card, with the winner’s artwork featured on the front.

The eight pupils, all from Brampton Ellis Primary School, were presented with chocolate coins form the House of Commons.
