RECORD numbers of fans are set to back Chesterfield FC at Wembley Stadium.

The club has already sold more than 16,000 tickets for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final against Swindon Town later this month – meaning the club will be taking more fans than on its last visit to the famous London stadium.

Chris Turner, club chief executive, said: “There has been a fantastic response.

“We’ve sold more than 16,200 tickets, which means the Spireites will have more fans at Wembley this time than the 14,000 or so we took for our last visit in 1995, the 2-0 play-off final win against Bury.

“But this is not just a special day out for Chesterfield fans, it’s also an opportunity for other football fans in the area as well.

“The message to all football fans in the wider area of Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire is an invitation to come along and enjoy a day out at Wembley with the Spireites.”

The club has initially been allocated 21,158 tickets in the east side of the national stadium, with a further 15,000 available if needed, while League Two leaders Swindon have been allocated 30,639.

The remaining Spireites tickets for the game on Sunday, March 25, are now on general sale, priced £46 for adults, after cheaper categories sold out.

All seats on the club’s official coach travel have also sold out, after more than 2,500 fans snapped up the £25 seats across 50 coaches.

East Midlands Trains is also putting on an improved service to London on the morning of the game.

A spokesman said: “East Midlands Trains will be operating a strengthened service with added trains from Chesterfield in the morning to help fans get to the game.

“Additional trains will leave Chesterfield at 7.11am, arriving at St Pancras at 9.50am, 7.30am, arriving at 10.20am, and 8.05am, arriving at 10.49am.

Chesterfield fans are also invited to get into the Wembley spirit with a range of special merchandise.

The Spireites Club Superstore at the B2net Stadium is now selling a variety of items ahead of the match, including foam hands, costing £6, cup final flags, priced £15, and scarves costing £7.
