Joanne ‘Jojo’ Kelly, of Capital FM’s breakfast team, handed out 10 awards to the youngsters who were hand-picked from the huge amount of nominations for each category received this year.

Each winner - from budding entrepreneur and Environment Award winner Alicia Cannon, to brave cancer battler Kasabian Newton-Smith - then took to the stage to be crowned a Superkid.

Jojo said: “You read about these awards, but when you’re faced with the young people the stories relate to it is very emotional.

“I got a bit choked when I was up there reading them out, I had to do a couple of man coughs to disguise it. Considering what these young people have been through, they are amazing.”

Sheffield United legend Tony Currie was present to represent the Blades and show the club’s support for Superkids.

He said: “I came here last year and was very moved by all of the stories. I am an emotional chap and it is always humbling to come here and listen to the history of the winners. I think it is important that Sheffield United show their support to events like this to show that we are at the heart of the community.”

The annual event was sponsored by restaurant chain Frankie & Benny’s, with individual awards sponsored by Crystal Peaks, alpharooms.com, Cutler’s Spice, The Source and First.

Fiona Gooch, Frankie & Benny’s area marketing manager, said: “It has been a fantastic day and it is great to recognise the young people in communities of South Yorkshire. Again it was an absolute pleasure for us to be involved.”
