MORE than 6,000 competitors will line up in Sheffield city centre on Sunday for the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run.

Amateur, professional and celebrity participants will start on Arundel Gate at 10am before heading along Penistone Road to Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium and returning to the finish line in the city centre.

Thousands of spectators are expected to line the streets on the 10k route.

This year’s designated regional charity is Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, while the Alzheimer’s Society is the designated charity for junior and mini runners.

One entrant is Krista Stones, of Greenhill, an ICT tutor at Freeman College, who will be raising money for Weston Park as thanks for the hospital’s care of her grandfather, Frank Bryan, and her father-in-law Glynn Stones, who have both battled cancer.

She said: “My grandad was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which then spread to his spine. My grandad was fantastic, thoughtful and had a great sense of humour. He died aged 69 but the standard of care he received at Weston Park was brilliant.

“My father-in-law was also diagnosed with stomach cancer a year ago and his prognosis looked bad. But he has had chemotherapy at Weston Park Hospital and the tumour has shrunk.

“The care and treatment he received has also been fantastic. The staff are so reassuring and provide essential support for family members too.

“I’m so grateful to live near the hospital because it’s such a valuable asset. I wanted to raise some money to give something back and to say thank you for caring for my family.”

Seven local bands and musicians will be performing along the course to encourage runners and to entertain spectators.

Main roads, including West Bar, Shalesmoor, Penistone Road, Haymarket and Snig Hill, will be closed on Sunday from 8am until 1pm. Surrey Street to Arundel Gate, High Street, Commercial Street and Park Square will be closed from 4am until 4.30pm.

Entry into the race costs £25 for adults and youngsters can sign up to the Bupa Junior and Mini Great Yorkshire Run for £9.
