A PAINTING by Silverdale School student Yekta Saidi of her grandmother is to go on show alongside work by professional artists at an exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.

It was on show at the Sheffield Young Artists event at Ponds Forge in May organised by the Rotary Club of Abbeydale and was among a selection of sixth-form students’ work submitted for consideration to the exhibition, organised by the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies and the Royal Society of British Artists.

After 19 of them made the shortlist of 300 works from schools, the president of the RBA selected Yekta’s painting. She will be designated an RBA Scholar alongside the elected members and fellows of the society.

Craig Longmuir, subject leader for art at Silverdale, said: “Yekta’s painting has a sensitive understanding of how paint can communicate subtle emotional ties to people that we love and the feeling is communicated with a confidence that belies her tender age.”

The fact that so many paintings made the shortlist is being seen as national recognition for the Sheffield Young Artists event, now one of the largest annual children’s art exhibitions in Britain with 960 paintings from 60 schools on display this year.

Organiser Ken Marshall of the Rotary Club of Abbeydale, said: “It is amazing how this event has grown in the past seven years but it also highlights the need and benefits of providing the opportunity for children to display their artistic talents.”

All schools in Sheffield are invited to register for the 2012 competition and exhibition at Ponds Forge on May 4 and 5, although paintings are not required until March.

The RBA exhibition in London runs from February 29 to March 10.
