A HAPPY new year - from both The Diary and from these six Sheffield cheerleaders.

The sextet are hoping to make 2013 particularly special.

They have spent the last two months performing before Sheffield Sharks basketball games - and have kicked off this year in style by releasing a smile-tastic calendar.

Now, give them a C-H-E-E-R because here is a sneak peak at some of the 12 images.

The good news is it’s all for charity.

The better news? The six-piece - collectively known as the Foxy Sharks - are currently looking for another 20 members to boost their numbers.

“We’ve been performing together since November,” says team captain Stacy McInally, a student at the Northern School Of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. “I heard the Sharks didn’t have a cheerleading team which seemed a shame so I suggested they take us on.

“Our inspiration is the Los Angeles Laker Girls, the cheerleading team for the Lakers basketball team. They’re so good at what they do and so professional too, it’s not unusual for people to go to games just to watch them. That’s what we’d like to be like.

“We’re currently recruiting. Members need to be over 18, able to dance and have a great personality.”

The team is currently made of Leeds-based lasses Stacy, 23, Shante Liburd, 22, Daniella Selwood, 21, and 20-year-olds Kayleigh Price and Akilah Greyson; as well as Sheffield stylist Nicole Hammemi.

“It’s great fun to be part of,” said the 20-year-old of Attercliffe who originally comes from Cyprus. “I’ve been dancing since I was two so I’ve been in training for this my whole life really. We seem to have gone down a bit of a hit at games so hopefully people will like this project. You’re always a bit nervous about having your picture taken but I think it’s worked out well”

The six decided to make the calendar after agreeing they wanted to do something for a good cause. All proceeds go to Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Support Group.
