Half term is behind us and the end of another school year is in sight.

Once again it’s time to celebrate all that is excellent in our schools and colleges with The Star Best in Education awards.

With 12 different categories available, these are awards that recognise every area of school life, from crossing patrol staff keeping pupils safe to the dedicated headteacher going the extra mile for their youngsters.

But we need your nominations to identify the contenders - not just from mums, dads and carers, but from pupils, teachers and governors too.

All the winners will be announced at a prestigious lunchtime ceremony to be held at Sheffield’s Mercure St Paul’s Hotel on Monday, July 7.

Already nominated in the Best Sports Team Category is Ballifield Primary School’s Year 3 and 4 girls’ gymnastics team, who won this year’s South Yorkshire finals.

Molly Birch, Emily Kirby, Mia Sykes. Jorge Croydon and Lillimae Cox qualified for the event after winning the area eliminator and then the Sheffield city championships.

The girls took home the South Yorkshire title after coming out on top against rivals from Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham - thrilling both parents and everyone at the Handsworth school.

“We’re so proud of them all - they really did the school proud,” said assistant head David Clayton.

Here are all the award categories in detail - what is your choice?

BEST LUNCH PERSON AWARD:

Do you know someone who has given up huge amounts of their time to help make your dining experience more pleasurable? Maybe they have taken part in a scheme to promote healthy eating in schools? No matter how large or small the contribution to your dinner times tell us about this special person.

BEST TEACHING ASSISTANT AWARD:

If you know a special teaching assistant who has gone over and above to help the needs of the pupils then tell us about them. Whether they are in a primary classroom or in college, if they have made a difference, we want to know.

BEST HEADTEACHER AWARD:

Is your headteacher the best you have ever had? Have they gone the extra mile for your school or turned around the way your school runs? If you think you know a headteacher who deserves recognition then nominate them today.

BEST TEACHER AWARD:

Have you got the best teacher and you want the whole of South Yorkshire to know it? Do they make learning fun and ensure that their pupils maintain high standards? Are they an excellent motivator? Let us know.

BEST SPORTS TEAM AWARD:

Does your school have a sports team which has achieved excellent results throughout the school year? Are they the best in the district or have they won something outstanding recently? All teams are eligible from football to netball - tell us about them.

MOST IMPROVED STUDENT AWARD:

Do you know someone who has perhaps not always found school life easy but has strived to succeed and has improved their grades throughout the year? Are they on course for excellent results in the future? Have they overcome the odds to do better than anyone ever expected?

BEST GREEN SCHOOL AWARD:

This award will be going to the school within the district who has shown exceptional pride in making sure their school is as environmentally friendly as possible. Is that your school? Do you follow a green scheme or do you have a group of environmental enthusiasts?

STAR PUPIL OF THE YEAR AWARD:

We want to know about academically gifted youngsters and those who have made amazing progress. Do you know someone who deserves recognition for their outstanding achievements? We want to know who that star pupil is.

BEST NURSERY AWARD:

Does your child go to the best nursery around? Is it because they have the best staff, the best learning facilities or is it simply just because your child loves it?

BEST CROSSING PATROL PERSON:

Do you want to say thank you to that special person who keeps you safe on the roads on the way to school? Why not tell us about the best crossing patrol person you know.

BEST SECRETARY/ADMIN ASSISTANT:

Do you know an important person who is the first point of contact in schools? Do they excel in matters of organisation, communication and all the small things that help make your school run that little bit easier?

BEST SCHOOL/COLLEGE OF THE YEAR:

If you think you attend the best school in the area then we want to know. Do they have the best teachers or the best facilities? Do they produce the highest achievers both in sport and academic life?
