THE Star’s Great Pie and Peas Up campaign is officially a roaring success - with fundraisers expected to have raised around £35,000 once donations are tallied up.

Almost 5,000 people have got involved with pie and pea suppers around Sheffield to help St Luke’s Hospice pay for its new £5 million inpatient unit, and there’s still time to sign up and enjoy a hearty meal for the good cause.

Among the recent suppers was an event at the Beighton Lifestyle Centre, which collected £390, while an impressive £900 was raised by Brunswick Retirement Village in Woodhouse. Around 70 guests tucked into pie and peas at the village, with a choice of meat and potato or cheese and onion pie.

The Sheffield College Choir added to the celebratory atmosphere, along with a special raffle and even a fancy dress pie-eating contest.

Sarah Shorley, St Luke’s capital appeal co-ordinator, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the many great and imaginative ways that people have found to support the Great Pie and Peas Up.

“All the money raised by the many events during March is going directly towards the cost of our new inpatient unit.”

Sarah added: “There’s still time to register so please do get in touch, get cooking, and get those invitations sent.”

Today children and staff at King Edward VII school in Broomhill will be lunching on pie and donating money, while this weekend Handsworth Junior Sports Club is holding a series of events, including a race night.

All this week, The Old House bar on Division Street is giving £2 to St Luke’s from every pie sold, as well as selling raffle tickets.
