Third dimension just part of story for Disney animation team

BOLT is being presented at selected cinemas in Disney Digital 3-D, seen as taking movie technology and artistry to a new level.

It marks the co-directing debut of Chris Williams (story supervisor) and Byron Howard (in charge of animation), who are very conscious that most people will see the film in its standard format.

They shot the film in a two-dimensional format while the 3-D element was the responsibility of a specialist team.

They are wary of the notion that stereoscopic 3-D is the future of movies. "The nice thing is it is in the hands of the audience right now," says Williams. "They are building more 3-D theatres and the audiences are filling those theatres so at the moment there is a want but I will be interested to see how far this revolution goes.

"When they first started talking about this technology those old 3-D movies were a gimmick, you would see these things flying at you. And they were pitching it as a more immersive experience but I thought it was actually less so because you are constantly being reminded of its artificiality, it's impossible to get lost in the story.

"If anything is thrown at the camera it is a 2-D choice."

Bolt grew out of an aborted Disney movie called American Dog. Williams said: "For me, there have been lots of dog movies and I think the mistake a lot of people make is that they will treat it like a person in a dog suit and have any kind of personality.

"But there had to be something true about this dog and true to what dogs are, which is that they are loving and loyal above all else. And I think there is almost not much else to them and I wanted to show that the absolute loyalty and absolute trust they have for their owner is really special."

Howard added: "To complete it we had this hamster who believes in Bolt almost more than Bolt himself. He was a great foil for the cat because not only do you have one crazy person on the trip, you have two."
