Twenty years ago this week it almost seemed as if the Steel City emptied itself and headed down the motorway to the old Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup semi-final showdown between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.

Though it had the intense rivalry of any Blades vs Owls the two factions were united in seeing it as a day for pride in Sheffield itself.

The match lived up to the day but left the red half of the city with the taste of defeat and Wednesdayites anticipating a Wembley final against Arsenal after a 2-1 extra time victory.

Mark Bright, now a coach at Crystal Palace and BBC pundit, scored the decisive goal in the second half of extra time after United had doggedly fought back through Alan Cork who cancelled out Chris Waddle’s sublime early free kick.
