Three Sheffield council cabinet members are on the shortlist to succeed David Blunkett as Labour candidate for Brightside and Hillsborough at next year’s general election.
Harry Harpham, who is also deputy council leader and Mr Blunkett’s agent, Leigh Bramall and Jackie Drayton will compete in the final hustings on October 26.
But they are expected to face stiff competition from the other candidate, Movement for Change community organiser Mike Buckley, who has secured two Labour Party branch nominations and the backing of the Co-operative Party and unions Unison and Usdaw.
Another city councillor, Ibrah Hussain, did not make the shortlist from an initial list of 15.
The constituency has long been a safe Labour seat, with a majority of 13,632 in 2010. A key issue to emerge is responding to tensions around Page Hall between local residents and Slovakian Roma migrants.
Mr Blunkett told the party last June that he would be stepping down as an MP.
