Occupational therapist Josie Reynolds, aged 55, from Sheffield, was handed the ‘Outstanding Care and Compassion Award’ at the annual Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust Extra Mile Awards.

Judges were moved by an account of Josie’s compassionate care for a terminally ill patient, and her family, in the days before her death.

Josie’s support enabled the patient to stay at home in her final days and provided reassurance to the family during a distressing time.

Josie said: “I’m absolutely stunned by the award.

“I work with such wonderful people, it’s really about the collective and I couldn’t have got this without them.”

Her colleague Chris Hampson, who nominated her for the award, said: “Josie demonstrates outstanding care and compassion in her work with patients in the community, often going the extra mile to provide personalised care to meet individual needs.”

Meanwhile, healthcare assistant Pat Newcombe, aged 71, of Dronfield, who also works in Dronfield Medical Centre, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

She was described by her work colleagues at Dronfield Medical Centre as the “backbone of district nursing for many years.”
