EXTRA train carriages are set to be introduced on services in South Yorkshire to help ease overcrowding.

Northern Rail, which runs most of the county’s local routes, is receiving 22 new carriages to use across its network, including services to Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.

Northern Rail managing director Ian Bevan said: “We are delighted that we will be able to provide much-needed additional capacity for our passengers from December. These carriages will deliver an extra 800,000 seats on peak time services across the north of England every year.

“Overcrowding has been one of the biggest challenges we have faced and one of the biggest causes of complaint from passengers.”

The first of the new carriages are due to be delivered in the autumn.
