A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said: “The two lorries were well alight on the M1 and firefighters used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.”

The area was made safe by about 4.40am but the incident created big delays along the motorway for bank holiday travellers.

Both southbound and northbound carriageways had to be closed initially however the northbound carriageway was reopened about 6.50am.

The southbound carriageway reopened at about 1pm yesterday afternoon.
