Doncaster’s Robin Hood Airport is expected to reopen at about 4pm today (Sunday). It had been due to open at midday but took longer than expected to clear the runway.

Bus operator First Bus said it was operating on main roads only in Sheffield and many routes in Rotherham have been disrupted. Buses are running normally in Doncaster.

Meanwhile, drivers were urged to be careful after a Met Office amber warning of widespread icy patches.

Sheffield City Council said its major road network was “passable with care” but its gritters had not been able to clear some secondary routes because of the number of abandoned vehicles.

The Travel South Yorkshire website - the hub of public transport information for the county - crashed last night and remained off line this morning.

Visitors saw the message ‘Service Unavailable’. But TravelSYorkshire is giving regular live updates, including replies to individual requests for information, on its Twitter site at @TravelSYorks

For all service queries, customers can call Traveline on 01709 51 51 51. Due to the adverse weather, Traveline is experiencing a high number of calls so waiting times are expected.

“Engineers are working to fix the website’s problems as soon as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience caused,’’ said a spokeswoman.

She added that bus services are currently running on most main routes in South Yorkshire.
