Campaigners are to hold a protest outside Sheffield Railway Station tomorrow over fears Government plans for changes to services will result in job cuts and increased fares.
Representatives from rail union RMT will be outside the station from 4pm to 6pm.
They are concerned about what potential changes to the Northern Rail and Transpennine Express franchises will mean for staff and passengers.
A public consultation is taking place on the plans.
The RMT says the planned changes will lead to reduced ticket office opening times, cuts to backroom staff and higher ticket prices.
RMT Acting General Secretary Mick Cash said: “These plans amount to nothing less than the ‘Beeching of the North’ – wrecking and closing essential rail services without any regard for the impact on the communities that we serve.
The Department for Transport said the new franchise awards were part of efforts to invest £1 billion in rail travel in the north over the next five years.
