two motorcyclists have been killed after coming off their bikes in separate road smashes in South Yorkshire over the weekend.

A 47-year-old man, who is likely to be named by police today, suffered severe head injuries which proved fatal in a collision at Mapplewell, near Barnsley.

The man, from Darton, Barnsley, was riding a blue Honda when a blue Mazda car on Pye Avenue turned right into Darton Lane into the path of the bike, police said.

The driver of the car - a 19-year-old woman from Mapplewell - was not injured in the smash at 10.10am on Friday.

On Saturday another motorcyclist died after a crash near Maltby, Rotherham.

The man, aged 53, sustained fatal injuries after being thrown from his red Aprilia motorbike and landing on a car.

His was travelling on the A631 from Tickhill towards Maltby at around 5.15pm when his bike overtook a blue Peugeot 206, then collided with the front near side of a blue Citreon Xsara.

The biker landed on the roof of a blue BMW Mini travelling towards Maltby, and died after sustaining multiple injuries. Nobody else was injured.

Police are appealing for information about both incidents.

Officers particularly want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collisions or the manner of driving of any of the vehicles involved.
