VIDEO: Batman inspires comics reading at S Yorks school

Waiting for Video...

HOLY teacher! Batman is helping to turn youngsters into super readers by giving away free comics in a South Yorkshire school, writes Graham Walker.

Sheffield-based World Of Superheroes, a comics and memorabilia business, own a £1,500 replica of the Batman suit worn by Christian Bale in the latest Dark Knight Rises blockbuster.

So they organised for Batman to drop in on teacher Emma Fox and her class when they heard they were studying superheroes at South Field Primary School, in Armthorpe, Doncaster.

Armed with free comics for all the children the caped crusader hoped to inspire the six and seven-year-olds to read more.

World Of Superheroes boss Steve Eyre and daughter Holly Wood also showed the children a second issue of Batman, worth £20,000, a Batarang movie prop, a Michael Keaton Batman bust and other collecatables from their site at www.worldofsuperheroes.com.

Holly, aged 21, said: “Batman is a great role model. We hope taking him in to the school and giving the children comics will inspire them to read more.

“We would love to go to other schools and do the same.”

Zac Garrison, seven, said: “Batman is one of my favourite superheroes. It was fantastic.”

Class teacher Emma Fox said: “We find that comics are really motivating for children who might not necessarily want to pick up a book. Perhaps we might have comics in school now as well. It’s fitted in well with our topic about superheroes. I’m sure other schools could follow suit.”

Comic book legend Stan Lee, who created superheroes including Spiderman and The Hulk, is backing a Sheffield project to help secondary school children with their reading and writing using comics, called The Stan Lee Excelsior Award, launched at Ecclesfield School.

Batman had the last word. He said: “Remember kids, stay safe, eat your vegetables, all your fruit and never stop reading comic books. It’ll make you a super reader, just like me - Batman.”
