Several bouquets of flowers were tied to a lamppost near to where the collision took place near The Railway Hotel, Blackburn Road, Wincobank, at around 1am.

One note pinned to a bunch read: “To my son and a brother. Fly high baby. RIP, missing you already, You will always be in our hearts, from all your family.”

Another read: “Josh, gone but not forgotten.”

Meanwhile the police have confirmed that the two men killed were both aged 19 and died at the scene. One, from Rotherham, was inside a black Vauxhall Astra and the other was inside a blue Peugeot 206.

Three other men inside the Peugeot – a 24-year-old from Rotherham, an 18-year-old from Rotherham and a 21-year-old man - were injured and have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have not yet said if either of the two men who died were passengers or driving.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision.

Star readers have also expressed their sympathies.

Susan Wallis wrote on Facebook: “Throughs and prayers are with the family at this sad time.”

And Patricia White said: “It is terrible, such tragic news.”

One nearby resident said there had been several collisions on the road.

She said: “It is quite dangerous, it is because there are no lights, it’s something to do with the roadworks but there are no lights whatsoever.”

The road was closed but has now reopened.

Fire crews remained at the scene until around 7am and a spokesman said several people were trapped in the vehicles. It was a ‘head on’ smash, she added.

Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw either vehicle before the collision to get in touch.

Anyone with information should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 82 of December 20.
