Today The Star is uniting with the Sheffield community to show some love for Meadowhall on the shopping centre’s 25th birthday.

A giant, 3D heart covered with front pages depicting some of the city’s golden moments has taken pride of place in the malls as part of the anniversary celebrations.

It was exactly a quarter of a century ago today that Meadowhall opened its doors to South Yorkshire customers in 1990.

To mark the milestone, 11 heart sculptures have been created and sent to charities, community groups and other partners from across the city to decorate for the ‘Meadowhall Hearts’ exhibition.

The concept of our heart, which will be on display on the Upper Mall near Hollister until October 24, has been dreamed up by our digital content editor Simon Waller to tell the story of The Star.

Simon said: “We wanted to show how much The Star has transformed from its early days as a newspaper in the 1800s to the present day – when we are delivering not just a newspaper but also a generous offering of online content including breaking news stories, live feeds and video clips using all the latest technology.

“We have also dedicated a section of our heart to showing how we have covered Meadowhall’s events over the last 25 years.

“It has been a pleasure to be involved in the Meadowhall Hearts project and I’m looking forward to taking a look at the other 10 sculptures.”

Meadowhall’s centre director, Darren Pearce, said: “We are celebrating 25 years of bringing people together so we wanted to
do something unique to mark our birthday celebrations.

“The Hearts project stood out as it gave the centre a chance to work with a variety of groups and community partners – but allowed them to put their own stamp on the installations.

“The celebrations are not just about us, it’s about the part we all play in the wider Sheffield community.”

Other organisations with a heart include St Luke’s Hospice, the Darnall, Wincobank and Tinsley communities and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
