Visitors left hospital in good heart after receiving top cardiac advice
LOVE your heart - that was the message at a special event where medical staff and former hospital patients helped to raise awareness of cardiac conditions.
Visitors to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield browsed more than 20 stalls run by specialist nursing teams, rehab and support groups, and also got the chance to meet people who were successfully treated for heart problems.
The event, held to coincide with National Heart Month, also aimed to represent the journey a cardiac patient experiences in Sheffield.
Staff gave advice and explained the causes of heart disease and treatments, and the Northern General’s rhythm management team displayed an internal defibrillator - which detects irregular heartbeats, delivering an electrical impulse to correct the abnormal rhythm.
John Mills, aged 67, from Killamarsh, was one of the patients who spoke to visitors. He was admitted to hospital last September with heart failure.
“All the care that I received was of the highest standard and nothing I asked for was ever too much. I’d never been in hospital before. But all the staff were excellent and reassured me throughout,” said John.
Stephen Campbell, clinical director for cardiology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said: “We’ve made some big improvements here and this event gave the people the chance to see what we do.”
Last year the Northern General Hospital fitted more than 500 permanent pacemakers and internal defibrillators and carried out more than 1,600 angioplasty procedures.
