Wartime fun at Rotherham dance

Ready for the dance.

Ready for the dance.

Wartime spirit was rekindled in Rotherham as a 1940s-style open air dance helped raise cash towards the building of a new war memorial for the town.

The event was arranged by the Friends of Clifton Park to mark Armed Forces Day at the park’s Garden House courtyard.

Dearne Big Band provided the music for the event, with couples dancing in vintage costumes to the tunes of the time.

Money raised from the event will go towards the campaign to build a new war memorial in the town to honour those who died in World War II.

Friends chairman Elaine Humphries said fundraising has been going on for around four years, and it is hoped a memorial with 1,121 names can be completed by the end of 2014.

She said Rotherham does not have a war memorial covering the whole town because its boundaries have changed twice since the 1940s.
