SHOPS across Sheffield are struggling to keep up with demand for brollies, wellies, and cagoules.
“We’ve sold all our wellies,” said Atkinsons store manager Graham Frith. “People react instantly to the weather, whether it’s good or bad so we pretty much sold out instantly.”
But the shop’s summer collection of sandals and sundresses remains on the rails.
“There are still people who have booked holidays abroad who are buying it, but the summer stuff’s not been selling well,” said Graham.
The weather has also had a bearing on the shop’s footfall.
“People just won’t come out. As a retailer what you want is for it to be nice in the morning and wet in the afternoon, but even in this weather we still have our regular customers and the eateries have been packed out.”
Foothills outdoor shop on Edgedale Road, Carterknowle, has been extra busy meeting demand.
“It’s been brilliant for us,” said managing director Ian Brown. “We’ve been dead busy selling waterproofs.
“We also run walking tours and we haven’t had to cancel any yet - Sheffield’s walkers are a hardy lot.
“With the right gear it can be quite nice out in the elements as long as you’re nice and dry.”
