IT might not have been the best of weather but there was plenty to smile about at the Hope Show on Bank Holiday Monday as these Laurel and Hardy lookalikes demonstrated.

Treasurer Peter Hayes said: “The weather may have affected a drop in gate takings from last year but the important thing was that the sections I talked to later in the day were very upbeat about the attendance and quality of entrants in their sections.”

Sponsorship at the annual agricultural show was also up.

President Steve Fox said: “It was a great day. I thought the heavy horse turnout was exceptional, as was the main ring display by The Imps, a young motorcycle display team.”

High winds on the eve of the show meant a team had to spend an hour repegging the cattle tent and rescuing the poultry tent.

The next morning they were up to their knees in mud, mending a water pipe.
