GET your skates on - there’s still time to catch he world’s fastest sport stars on two legs today at the 2011 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Sheffield, writes digital editor Graham Walker.

The three day event, which began Friday, ends later today - Sunday, March 13 - at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena.

Director ice skating Ken Pendrey said: “These skaters reach incredible speeds of around 35mph. And some of the best in the world are on show. It’s a great spectacle and we would urge the people of Sheffield and South Yorkshire not to miss this top sporting event.”

Hundreds of the best skaters on the planet are taking part, including Olympic and world champions.

Great Britain’s charge is being led by Jack Whelbourne, who won individual and team medals at the recent ISU European Short Track Speed Skating Championships.

Helping to promote the event is Wilf O’Reilly, or Speedy O’Reilly as he became known after winning two speed skating gold medals for Britain at the 1986 Winter Olympics.

The National Ice Skating Association (NISA) is hosting the spectacle for the first time in England for 10 years. It will be broadcast to millions around the world on live TV.

The ISU Junior Grand Prix is at iceSheffield from September 29 to October 3. The European Figure Skating Championships, the third largest figure skating competition in the world, will be at the Motorpoint Arena in 2012.
