Thousands of partygoers are set to raise a glass at a South Yorkshire weekend filled with bratwurst, beer and lederhosen.

Organisers of the two-day Oktoberfest in Rotherham have ordered 12,000 pints of lager to cater for the 2,000-plus revellers expected to attend.

Magna science centre will be transformed for South Yorkshire’s version of the famous beer festival held in Munich, Germany, each year.

John Silker, Magna chief executive, said: “We get thousands of people coming to our Christmas parties each year and we thought why not organise some more events throughout the year.

“We’ve got masses of space here to have a real party – this way you don’t have to go all the way to Munich for a good old knees-up.”

Oktoberfest visitors can expect a disco, traditional Oompah band and stalls selling plenty of sausages and sauerkraut.

Past and present Miss South Yorkshires will be dressed in traditional German costume to meet and greet festival-goers and the party will kick-off with some popular German drinking games.

And revellers are invited to join in the fancy-dress fun by donning their own lederhosen to be in with a chance of winning a best-dressed competition and its first prize of a case of champagne.

Special buses will be running between Magna, Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre and Rotherham town centre during the event, on Friday and Saturday, October 3 and 4.
