It is Shine by name and shine by nature for the new home of a Sheffield charity supporting teenagers with weight issues.

Young volunteers rolled up their sleeves to give the Shine Health Academy’s premises a much-needed makeover.

The charity, which aims to help obese young people aged 10 to 17 to lose weight and increase confidence, sent out a call for help after moving in to a property in Prince of Wales Road, Manor, which was in need of a sprucing up.

A team of 15 young people from another city charity, Sheffield Futures, answered their appeal by devoting a day’s graft to the project for International Volunteer Day.

They were joined by Shine support workers as they stripped woodchip from the walls and tidied piles of decorating debris.

Kath Sharman, Shine managing director, said: “Everything we do is thanks to volunteers; we were all strangers and came together as a team.

“It never ceases to amaze me how kind people are in giving up their time to help groups like ours.

“Words cannot express our gratitude.”

The work helped Shine to provide a friendlier, lighter and brighter setting for service users.

It was previously based in nearby Alison Crescent, an industrial estate, and moved to Prince of Wales Road with the help of a donation from Manor Right Advice Centre.

Staff opened the new centre, complete with therapy rooms and consulting areas, earlier this year, but more work needs to be done to bring the building up to scratch.

More volunteer events are planned for the future.

College student Collette Gardener, who took part for Sheffield Futures, which works to help people ‘achieve their full potential’ said: “It’s nice to give to people in need of help and our time is free.”

Shine Health Academy is welcoming donations of soft furnishings to help with the renovation.
