From Colin Ross
Deputy leader, Liberal Democrat group on Sheffield City Council
I’m delighted to hear that the NUS have decided to host their 2012 and 2013 conferences in Sheffield, bringing an estimated £2m to the city.
This comes as a direct result of our policy to up the council’s game in terms of making sure Sheffield attracts the major events it deserves.
Big conferences can help lots of businesses in addition to the venues, from big hotel chains down to independent traders and restaurants.
And through the investment we’ve made, the city can now benefit directly from those who come to visit.
The Lib Dem Conference this year finally demonstrated that Sheffield is capable of hosting big events.
Hopefully now the city will compete on a level that it should have done years ago and we will be able to bring more investment and jobs.
