Giant step for small businesses

From: Karen Close

Avid Organics

On January 27 2011, the Sheffield Telegraph published an article, Taking on the giants, about my business, Avid Organics, a small organic box delivery scheme, based in Stocksbridge.

It concerned my involvement with a new loyalty scheme, rewarding customers for buying from small, ethical businesses with green credentials.

I wanted to write to you to let your readers know the positive impact it has had on my business and others within the Yorkshire area.

On the day of publication, at precisely 08.23, I received my first telephone order, from a new customer interested in supporting local business. This continued for approximately an hour, as more and more people, fed up of supermarket domination, came forward. Some wanted to chat, others wanted to shop, but they all confirmed a large proportion of Sheffield residents WANT to support local business.

Then, in April, I received an unexpected telephone call from Lee Greenwood, the Centre Manager of Crystal Peaks. He had read the Telegraph article and was interested in discussing how the centre could help support small business within the Yorkshire area. We met up and are now in the process of organising a Supporting Yorkshire Business Market to be held on Saturday June 25 in the centre car park. So, as a result of Taking on the Giants, Crystal Peaks, is providing a low cost, high footfall, opportunity for up to 30 small businesses from the Yorkshire region! What a wonderful result.

I would like to thank you and your readers for the positive feedback and support shown. It makes all the hard work worthwhile!
