As interesting as Peter Kennan’s article on cheap train travel was, I fear he may not have done his research properly.

His example of travelling from Sheffield to Birmingham Int, splitting the ticket three times, fails to take into account that for the same price as a Derby to Birmingham New St return ticket, he could have actually bought a return ticket to ‘Birmingham All Stations’ thus saving himself another £4!

Splitting tickets is useful, even for advance purchase tickets too. The National Rail website gives you arrival and departure times for all stations en route, making the planning process even simpler.
