More questions than answers

This week I received the leaflet from the Sheffield Elections Office which purports to explain what would be the powers and responsibilities of an elected mayor, should Sheffield vote to have one in the forthcoming local referendum.

The answer to this question? No-one knows.

The leaflet says that it would be for an elected mayor and the members of Sheffield City Council to sort out between them, after a mayor had been elected, what powers the mayor would have.

I for one will certainly not be voting to have a mayor with unspecified powers over the destiny and wellbeing of Sheffield.

I also think that investing decision-making powers in a single individual is an invitation to corruption and undue influence from powerful lobby groups.
