But Bob Willerton will leave the college anyway, in a deal thrashed out by new principal Colin Booth in consultation with Mr Willerton, his union and a legal advisor.

The former head of computing was originally fired for gross misconduct after allegedly failing to stage a proper disciplinary procedure involving one of his lecturers.

The shock decision sparked outrage from staff, with an angry demonstration outside the college building on Church Street, a one-day strike, and a day of protest, with union members wearing 'Bring Back Bob' T-shirts.

Mr Willerton, who had 25 years' experience, was a senior official with UCU, the University and College Union.

New principal Colin Booth had to chair Mr Willerton's appeal hearing four days after arriving.

A college spokesman said today: "After detailed consideration by the principal, the following actions were agreed by both the college and Mr Willerton and his union.

"The original decision to dismiss Mr Willerton for gross misconduct is withdrawn. Both parties agree it is in the best interests of both Mr Willerton and the college that he continues his career away from Barnsley College.

"Mr Willerton leaves with the best wishes of the college.

"The decision of the principal and subsequent discussions with Mr Willerton and his representatives are, and will remain, confidential to both parties and will not be disclosed to any other organisation.

"Consequently there will be no further statements regarding this matter. Both parties consider that this matter is now closed."

Dave Gibson, of the UCU, said: "No union official will make any further statements or comments."
