THESE children caught on camera playing on a Sheffield railway line have been warned they are putting their lives at risk.
They were captured by a concerned passer-by on the tracks at Oughtibridge, who said he could not believe the risks they were taking.
If a train had been approaching the three youngsters may not have had enough time to move out of its path.
One youngster was caught in a manhole in the middle of the railway, with his head just poking out.
Another was captured up a ladder at the top of an old disused signal gantry at the side of the tracks and one was standing just a few feet away from the tracks.
They were spotted playing on the eight mile stretch of track which runs from Sheffield to Deepcar and once formed part of the now disused Woodhead line.
It is largely redundant apart from being used by freight trains coming to and from the steelworks at Stocksbridge once a day.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Route crime such as trespass costs the rail industry millions of pound each year as well as severely disrupting train services and inconveniencing passengers.
"Trespass on the railway is a criminal offence which can see the offender end up in court and result in a fine of £1,000 being given.
"Those who gain access to prohibited parts of the railway are putting their own lives at risk as well as the lives of staff and passengers on trains."
