FIRE chiefs have applied for permission to build a new fire station to replace existing ones at Mexborough and Brampton, which are set to close.
The new station, which would be built on land off Manvers Way, near Wath-on-Dearne, if granted planning permission by Rotherham Council, would be known as the Dearne Valley station and have enough room for four engines and a new training centre.

I
t would be manned by two crews - a total of 14 firefighters at a time - and between 10 and 15 retained firefighters would be recruited to work part-time.

The new station would mean fire crews should be able to respond to all 999 calls in the six minute set response time.

The plan to close Mexborough and Brampton stations was met by fierce criticism when the suggestion was first mooted in 2006, with around 16,000 people signing a petition against it.

If it gets the go-ahead the new station would open next summer.
