Sheffield University Bankers sprang a Leek in their opening game of the newly restructured National League.
Despite scoring twice to draw level, hopes of 'Fortress Goodwin' were quickly dispelled as the visitors' strong central midfield pairing took control of the game to inflict a 4-2 defeat on the Sheffield side.
With David Smith, Tim Caston, Nick Fletcher, Scott Sanderson and Tristan Gilbody all back in the frame, Bankers battled hard and Darius Virabi's short corner strike produced a fine save by the Leek keeper. Moments later they fell behind when Oli Pau saved well from the initial short corner shot but was helpless as the ball rebounded to a visiting forward who calmly lobbed it into the net.
Smith converted a short corner on the stroke of half time to level it up only for the home side to fall behind again via a penalty stroke.
The battle of the short corners continued with Bankers this time benefiting from some 'right place at the right time' luck, as Gilbody opened his account.
Clumsy tackles and loss of concentration led to yet another short corner for the visitors which ended with the ball looping over Pau and Virabi. Then five minutes from time a simple passing move carved Bankers open and it was game over.
What a start for the newly promoted second team as they crushed Doncaster 13-1. Captain Chris Downham was naturally delighted: "It was a great game to be a part of. We completely blew them away with our slick passing and cool finishing."
They travel to Crewe tomorrow.
