Despite being without five regular first -teamers Sheffield Collegiate were far too strong as struggling Harrogate were beaten by nine wickets in a game once again dominated by Nick Gaywood
Returning after a holiday break he hit a chanceless 105 not out to reinforce the claim that he is consistently the best opener in the Yorkshire Premier League.

His total for the season is now 720 runs from 14 innings at an average of 65, mostly sc
ored in quick time with many elegant shots.

Harrogate elected to bat and although they quickly lost Imran Patel for 9 Collegiate had to wait until the score had reached 85 before their next success, when Nadeem had Stuart Clark caught by Rob Greaves for 28.

The innings changed when Pete Turnbull returned for a second spell, which saw the 19-year-old all-rounder from Stoke take five wickets as Harrogate crumbled to 195 all out in the 54th over.

Nadeem Khan took his total for the season to 53 when he returned 3 for 53 from 13.3 overs with Turnbull ending with 5 for 41 from 14.

Regular second-teamer Israr Asif then joined Gaywood in the run fest as they put on 151 for the first wicket when Collegiate replied before he was bowled by Nick Taylor for a splendid 64.

Turnbull wrapped up a good afternoon scoring 24 not out as Collegiate won with four overs to spare.

Skipper Matt Dixon was satisfied with the performance. He said: "The fielding wasn't so good, but the bowling was fine and Pete Turnbull's second spell was very good.

"He has only joined us this year and he is a good example to other youngsters in the club as to what you can do if you work hard."

He was also pleased by stand-in wicketkeeper James Colton who took three catches and a stumping.

He said: "James did very well as stand- in for Jason Pitcher. He did a good job and grabbed four victims."

Sheffield United skipper Neil Longhurst last week said he was worried about the quality of Scarborough's spinners and his fears proved to be well founded.

The two off-break bowlers wreaked havoc at North Marine Road to reduce United from 97 for 2 to 113 all out.

Longhurst hit a brisk 32 off 29 balls at the top of the innings, but only Matt Milburn (25) and Tanzeel Ali (20) got past 20.

Steve Tennant bowled 18 overs to take 3 for 30 and spin twin James Finch was even more miserly, taking 4 for 24 from 16 accurate overs

Scarborough, in reply, had little difficulty reaching thre target in just 27 overs. Darren Harland leading the charge with 36. Tom Fletcher took two wickets to take his total to 38.

Both local teams play twice over the Bank Holiday including the derby clash tomorrow at Bawtry Road.

People often say "it's a funny old game" but on the face of recent form Collegiate look clear favourites.

They pick from a full squad for the first time for a few weeks, whilst United's batsmen are all struggling to get beyond 20.

Collegiate visit Castleford on Monday who, after four wins on the spin are only six points behind leaders York who surprisingly lost at Driffield last week.

Hull, who knocked off Barnsley's 249 off the final ball last time out, are tough Bank Holiday visitors for United, who are desperate for points to avoid falling to second bottom.
