Former Sheffield Wednesday suitor Paul Gregg's apparent advance on Southampton has added a new - and old - ingredient to the Hillsborough takeover teaser, writes Alan Biggs.
The ex-Everton director was, you'll recall, pressing a bid for conrol of the Owls when former chairman Dave Allen revealed a solicitor's letter in which Gregg expressed unease about Wednesdayite's 10% shareholding.
It's a reminder that many a brid
ge has to be crossed before the Owls finally change hands.
Agreement from two former directors - Allen and Keith Addy - plus fellow 10% stakeholder Geoff Hulley, and the fan group, will all be required when the identity of bidders emerges. Gregg, I understand, has found a more viable route into Southampton and negotiations are verging on a deal.
So, too, at Hillsborough evidently where secrecy remains paramount. It's understandable, considering the delay, for some fans to suspect a stalling tactic, but the line from the club remains constant.
"Negotiations are very delicate and we remain at an advanced stage with two groups," says chief executive Kaven Walker, who has effectively fronted the club since Allen quit the board.
Beyond that, nothing is known.
But all parties are agreed that substantial investment is a must and the sooner the better.
