SHEFFIELD Hallam Civica had much to applaud in their test against the best showdown at table-topping Brooklands.
It was always going to be a tough ask but the Abbeydale side proved more than a match for the home side who reached the promotion play-offs last season.
They even gave the leaders a two-goal start before they were finally edged out 3-2.
It was
certainly a day to remember for Man-of-the-Match performer Will Hearne who got Hallam back into the game with his first league goal from a short corner.
However, against the run of play, Brooklands scored a breakaway goal but five minutes later a break down the right allowed Longson to get to the baseline and goal king Will Musgrave scrambled the ball home at the far post.
More drama followed as Civica came agonisingly close to an equaliser only for Brooklands to win a debatable penalty stroke on the counter attack but Gareth Auker was equal to the task as he pulled off an excellent stop low to his left.
The excellent performance should boost confidence for the visit of newly-promoted Durham University on Sunday (1.30pm).
Have shirts will travel for the second team in their 3-2 success at Wakefield. They were forced to buy some white T-shirts after a mix-up but the changed strip proved lucky thanks to goals from Alex Bailey, Matt Gough and Nick Sims.
The win put them in second place in North Division 2E, one point behind Chapeltown but a monumental 14 goals behind on goal difference. Eight of those came in the game against Leeds University Seconds and guess who Hallam face at Abbeydale tomorrow?
No joy for the Thirds who were hit for four by Brigg. Fortunately other teams at the top of the league also struggled so they held on to second place although they now trail Sheffield University Bankers by five points. Hallam face an away-day challenge against third-placed Ramgaria tomorrow.
Chris 'make mine a double' Wilkins and Will Lacey scored the goals as the Fourths gained a well deserved 3-3 draw at table-topping Harrogate. They have a key match against Chapeltown Seconds tomorrow which could lift them into second place.
Four of a kind three times over for sharp-shooting Will Spencer, Dom Dunn and John Bleakley. Spencer cracked his four in the Fifths 8-1 turkey shoot against once-powerful Hull, with add-ons from Rich Yardley, Joe Houghton and Richard Axon. It moved them into seventh in Division 2, one place behind the Fourths but on the same number of points. Currently only three points separate eight teams so one win could move a side up into second place or a defeat drop them to 10th.
Dunn's four-goal blitz headlined the sixth team's 6-0 eclipse of Huddersfield Thirds with others from Battison and Kinkead. It will be much tougher tomorrow as they take a trip to leaders Old Malton who have a six-out-of-six return.
Bleakley's bonus came for the eighth team in their 5-1 win over bottom club Chapeltown Fourths while Matt Collins added to the spree.
John Harrison was on target for the Sevenths in their 3-1 defeat against Kingston-upon-Hull while Philo Nunn scored twice in the Ninths 7-2 loss against Rotherham Sixths.
A combined third, fourth and fifth team crashed out of the Cup after they suffered a 6-1 defeat against LA Carnegie and it was a similar story for the Sevenths as they went down 4-1 to University Bankers. Adam Harriman got the goal.
The Boys Under-15s obliterated Wilmslow 15-0 in the EH Boys Plate. Phil Nunn led the goal fest with six while Adam Harriman hit four and there were others for James Harrison 2, James Brotherton, Hugh Bagley and James McClure.
