IT may not have been one for the purists but Sheffield Hallam Civica duly opened their season in goal-happy style against Formby.
They eased their way to a 3-0 win over their National North Conference rivals at Abbeydale although it took some time for pressure to be turned into goals.

James Gallacher finally broke the deadlock courtesy of a penalty corner conversion just aft
er the half-hour mark and then hot-shot Will Musgrave carried on from where he left off last season to double the advantage on the stroke of half-time.

Civica's two goal cushion proved decisive after the interval and Formby's frustration eventually boiled over when Hampson was dispatched to the sin bin soon to be followed by Hallam's Andy Hooton for what was deemed a reckless challenge. Saul Halladay completed the scoreline in the final minute.

All the pressure but nothing to show for it was the story of the day for a much-changed men's second team.

They had the majority of the play but failed to find the net and in the end paid the price as Gateshead came away from Abbeydale with a 2-0 victory.

Premier League debutant Will Lacey was twice on target as the Thirds eased their way to a 3-0 success over a depleted Slazengers thanks to a double from Lacey and another from North. The Thirds travel to LA Carnegie tomorrow (1.30 start).

Chris Freeman turned goal hero with four for the Fourths as they eclipsed the Fifths 5-1 in their Yorkshire Division Two inter-club derby clash. Chris Wilkins, who had set up two of Freeman's goals, made the most of a 'returned favour' with the fourth goal. Phil Parkes was on target for the fifths.

The friendly match between the sixth and seventh teams was more about giving everyone a run out but Chris Battison and Dom Dunn certainly made the most of it. They each hit hat-tricks and Adursh Ruperalia plundered a double as the sixths romped to an 8-3 victory. George Unwin led the Sevenths reply with a brace while Ryan Young added the other.

Both the eighth and ninth teams suffered heavy defeats as the former went down 5-0 at Harrogate and the latter crashed 7-0 against Rotherham Sixths.

Tomorrow's fixtures: M1 v Sheffield Bankers, Goodwin (1.30pm); M2 v Leeds Adel Carnegie 1 (3.00); M3 v Leeds Adel Carnegie 2 (1.30); M4 v Rotherham, Abbeydale (11.45am); M5 v Rotherham 3, Aurora (4.00); M6 v Wakefield 4, away (noon), M7 v Rotherham 5, Abbeydale (10.15); M8 v Normanby Park 3, Abbeydale 1.30; M9 v City of York 10, away.
