Oh brother! Double Wales call-up caps fine season
BROTHERS in arms twice over for the ultra-successful Sheffield Steelers lacrosse club.
Andy Hopkins and Morgan Evans, very much part of the successful promotion and Cup-winning A team, have been selected for the Wales Under 19 team to take part in the World Championships in Vancouver between July 2 and 12.
And to cap it all they will be joined by their brothers.
Rob Hopkins from the Steelers U16 team will be the youngest member of the Welsh squad and Rhodri Evans, who played in the 2003 Championships in Baltimore, has been named as team captain and defensive coach.
All four players have come through the Tapton School lacrosse programme.
Club captain Simon Jones said: "It's been an amazing year. The junior teams have all contributed to the club's success; their records are incredible.
Our girls section is competing well and with more games next season we're aiming for further success."
Sarah Ward was voted most valuable player and Beth Skinner, from Notre Dame, the most improved player.
Chairman Chris Horsefield felt it was their best season ever. "This is a triumph for our coaching system and the support from local schools. Of the 26 players in the National senior cup finals no less than 21 had come through the junior development programme and feeder schools such as Tapton, King Edwards, Notre Dame, St Maries, Lydgate, Nether Green, Hallam, Hunters Bar, Abbeydale, Sharrow and Ecclesall."
The U12s went on an unbeaten run of 13 games and ended the season with a league record of 12 wins, 2 draws and only three defeats – two of which were in the Northern and National Cup semi-finals and on both occasions against the eventual winners.
Jack Kirby was named most improved Player and Isuru Fernando voted the most valuable player while Matt Moroney, who also made his debut for the U14 cup team, received the team player of the year award.
The U14s reached the semi-finals of the Centurion Cup. Adam Jordan notched an incredible 44 goals while Lawrence Aspin and Tom Gil bert gained the MVP and MIP awards.
Despite their last-gasp 6-5 defeat to Heaton Mersey in the Junior and Schools Cup Final the U16s showed they will be a formidable force in next season's U19 championship. MVP George Ievers led from the front with 45 goals while brother Dan supported with 20 goals along with Robert Hopkin, 20, and Matthew Beresford, 21, who formed part of a high scoring attack that averaged 14 goals a game. The MIP award went to defender Callum Mcpherson.
