ROWER turned cyclist James Thompson has gained his first British event success ... and in some style.
The Sheffrec CC rider broke from the field of 80 on the first lap of the Wakefield staged race and maintained his advantage for the 36 miles.

He comfortably beat off the lone opposition in a sprint finish, with the main field trailing home some 1min 30secs behind.

James, who switched from elite level rowing to cycling last year, has quickly risen through the ranks and his victory earned him his Second Category status, based on points earned this season.

He is now working towards First Category standing.

James also featured in the elite senior race at Otley Town Centre Criterium where he finished sixth in a field of 100 which included World Team Pursuit Champion Lizzie Armistead.

Fellow club riders, Marc Etches, Pete Wood, Graham Waller and Simon Jackson also took part.
