Sheffield United came crashing down to earth after the opening-day success at Driffield, with a heavy defeat against League leaders Barnsley.
Neil Longhurst won the toss and decided to field and his judgement looked sound when Tom Fletcher had Simon Widdup caught at the wicket by Jamie Harrison for 4. Alex Morris then joined Mark Lawson and the county men edged the score forward against so
me excellent bowling by Fletcher and took it to 69 before Lawson was stumped for 22 and Fletcher made it three when Morris became Harrison's third victim caught for 36.
Jason Booth then took the game away from United with a sparkling knock of 59 off 67 balls. Joe Ellis joined in the party, crashing 33 off 21 balls to see Barnsley reach 216 for 5. Fletcher toiled manfully, bowling 26 overs to take 4 for 80.
United, in reply, got off to the worst possible start when they lost last week's hero, Nick Armstrong without scoring. Matt Milburn followed for 7 and when skipper Longhurst was bowled by Ellis for 14 all chances of a shock victory disappeared. Andy Hirst held the innings together for a while scoring 37, but wickets fell at the other end and they were all out for 99 in 29.4 overs.
Ellis took 4 for 33 from10 overs and there were three for 20 for Adam Wilson and two for Carrington.
United made an early exit from the National Knockout losing by 7 wickets to Notts Premier League Popplewick and Linby.
Led by former England star Phil DeFreitas the hosts gave United batsmen a torrid time. Longhurst top-scored with 25 and Dave Rodgers hit 20 but they were all out for 90.
United made a good start and in persistant rain they had the hosts at 10 for 2. DeFreitas then put up a dolly that was dropped before he had scored. The ex-Test man took full advantage by smashing 30 off two Longhurst overs to win the match by 7 wickets. The average age of the United side was 18, six years by far the youngest team ever fielded in a first team game.
Matt Dixon elected to bat at Abbeydale against Driffield and quickly saw Yorkshire's Richard Pyrah ruin plan A when he had Danny Walton caught for a duck. He then clean bowled Nick Gaywood for 8. A fine knock of 51 not out by Chris Colgate aided by 29 from Jason Pitcher enabled Collegiate to recover well to reach 166 for 8, Pyrah finishing with 3 for 60.
Mark Hickman gave Dixon the ideal start when he cleaned up opener David Barber without scoring and with the score on 19 Robert Greaves brought the house down, clean bowling Pyrah middle stump for 9. Collegiate then came up against stiff resistance from Joe Fraser (61) and Will Norman (50no) who edged their way to the target, but with tight bowling only three balls were left when the winning runs were hit.
Monday's encounter was equally close. Michael Simpson batted very well for 58 and with Chris Stewart (29) they took the score174 for 9 with two wickets apiece for Kasif Raza, Andy Parkin Coates and Paul Stokoe.
The Doncaster reply was dominated by Graham Attenborough, the experienced opener scoring 93 to set up the victory.
Collegiate stuck to their task and put the pressure on after he was dismissed and only 7 balls remained when Doncaster won.
Hull pulled off an unlikely victory over York. Chasing 254 for 6 Dan Wilkinson smashed a 6 off the last ball to get the five required. Unfancied Hull are second.
Collegiate visit Clifton Lane tomorrow and United are at home to Appleby Frodingham.
