Athletics: Budding stars ready to take centre stage

South Yorkshire are strongly represented at the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Castle Donington tomorrow

The intermediate boys team is, perhaps, the strongest squad led by James Gormley (Sheffield) who last week led Yorkshire to victory in the under 17 Inter Counties Championship.

Amelia Lancaster (Sheffield) was fifth in the junior girls race last year and competes again in the same age group where Alice Moore (Barnsley) should also figure prominently.

The Northern 12 Stage Road Relay Championship, meanwhile, takes place tomorrow at Heaton Park, Manchester. Hallamshire have a team in the men’s race and in the women’s six stage race and interest will centre of Andy Heyes who will look to translate his outstanding form over the country onto the road.
