Sheffield-based athletes John Lane and Karla Drew were part of the Great Britain squad which won an International Combined Events match at the English Institute of Sport last weekend.

Lane, aged 24, has been in terrific form during the indoor season and set a new British record for the heptathlon with a score of 5,982 points to beat Alex Kruger’s previous mark of 5,978.

Lane said: “I knew I was in good shape coming into the event because of my form over the past couple of weeks but I didn’t think I’d break the National Record.”

Drew, aged 24, took part in her final multi-event competition before switching her focus to the hurdles. She’s in Austria today competing for England. She said: “The Commonwealth Games are my aim this season. I feel I have a better chance of making the team in the hurdles.”
