The EIS Sheffield is again the venue for the National Indoor Championships today and tomorrow.

Jessica Ennis is not contesting the indoor scene this year, although she is training hard with the World Championships in mind in August.

Neither are other Olympic champions Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford taking part, but there is still a top-class line up for the meeting which will be used as a trial for the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg.

Olympic silver 400 metres medallist Christine Ohuruogu steps down to contest both the 60 and 200m while bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz is the star attraction in the high jump.

Sheffield’s Mukhtar Mohammed, who narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Olympics, begins his season in the 800m while Richard Buck (York), who runs for City of Sheffield in British League competition, competes in the 400m.

In the field events, Jamie Williamson (City of Sheffield), who set a personal best of 18.29 in the Northern Championship recently, is a medal contender along with Northern winner Greg Beard (Newham and Essex).

Steve Lewis (Newham and Essex), fifth in the Olympics, is firm favourite for the pole vault but Luke Cutts (Dearne ALC) should challenge for a medal.

Karla Drew (City of Sheffield), who won the national pentathlon title at the EIS last month, lines up against a strong field in the 60m hurdles.

The action on both days starts at noon.
